My Daughter Totally Forgot About My 90th Birthday, So I Spent It Alone Until the Doorbell Ringed

Patty was excited to share this significant occasion with her daughter and grandchildren as she celebrated becoming 90 years old. But after they failed to pitch, she found herself rejoicing with an unexpected visitor who had bad news.

Being 90 years old, I can confirm with confidence that I have had a happy and wonderful life. My name is Patty.

Since my husband passed away a few years ago, my daughter Angie and I have been our only family members.

I still recall how happy I was to be turning 90th year old. My daughter had assured me that she would visit me and spend the day with my grandchildren.

My heart would always warm when I see my grandchildren. It reminded me of the time I spent raising Angie with my husband. My grandsons looked a lot like my daughter and gave me a lot of deja vu.

But they also bore a striking resemblance to their father and Angie’s former spouse, John. John was someone I had always loved. When I found out that they were divorcing crushed my heart.

The closest thing I’d had to having a son of my own was John. He has a golden heart and was a caring person. He still writes me a Christmas letters to this day.

I really wish he and Angie could have reconciled, but sometimes that’s just the way life goes.

When the day of my birthday finally arrived, I was sooo happy. But as the day went on, I started to get concerned. Lunchtime was approaching, and Angie still didn’t come. She didn’t pick up when I called her multiple times.

This time, when I tried to call Angie, the call went directly to voicemail. Because she was the one driving, I assumed she wouldn’t be able to respond. But as time went on, I realized that, like many days before this, I would be spent the day alone.

At last, the doorbell rang. I would’ve jumped up if my knees hadn’t become so brittle. This was the perfect birthday present because I hadn’t seen Angie and the kids in a long time.

My jaw dropped when I noticed the manly silhouette on the other side of my glass door as soon as I arrived at it. John was waiting for me with gifts and flowers when I opened the door.

“Happy Birthday, Ma!!” John smiled warmly as he said.

“John? Whoa, what a surprise! You didn’t have to!” I chirped.

“Just brought you a little something to celebrate you on this wonderful day,” John stated.

“Is the chocolate I see there my favorite? Whoa, what a surprise! You remembered?” I answered, making an effort to hide my red cheeks.

“How do I overlook that? You would only ever eat that.” John laughed as he spoke.

“You’re too charming. Could you come to supper with me?”

“Oh no, that’s wrong. I don’t want to bother. You must have plans.” John answered modestly, “I just wanted to drop off your presents and see you.”

“That’s absurd! I would like the companionship and don’t have anything planned.” I also insisted on cooking apple pie.

“Apple pie? “Well, you ought to have started with that,” John said as he went in.

One more thing I cherished about John was his amazing culinary skills. This brought back many memories of my late husband, who was also an amazing chef.

John and I had a great time cooking that day.

I was just thankful for the companionship, but he insisted on handling the most of the labor. John finally inquired about Angie as we were having dinner.

Will Angie and the children come join us? I didn’t think that I was ambushing her or doing anything similar. To be honest, I didn’t plan on staying. But I’m happy I did,” John remarked.

“That’s absurd! We are family since you are my grandchildren’s father. “And no, I don’t think Angie will come along today,” I answered in a disappointed manner.

“Oh, that’s disappointing to hear.” John said, “You shouldn’t spend your birthday by yourself.

“Well, I’m not, son, thanks to you,” I said, holding his hand. “Thank you, John,” I said at the end.

“No issue. Would you mind telling me why she didn’t come? or the children, anyway? I expected them being here. They enjoy having time with you,” John continued.

“All of them were expected to arrive, but Angie isn’t returning my calls. I genuinely don’t know what happened, but I have no doubt she will call me soon,” I remarked.

“The least she could have done was drop off the kids; I’m not sure what’s going on with her. I’m going to call her,” John urged.

To my astonishment, Angie answered when John called her. Later, John would explain to me why my daughter bailed me on my birthday.

John continued, looking a little angry, “So, it turns out Angie, her new boyfriend, and the kids are all on vacation.”

“Trip? Did she not inform anyone about it? Did she simply just went away? Why would she act in such way?” I enquired.

“Patty, your guess is as good as mine. How can she get away with taking my kids and not saying a word to me?” John answered.

“Oh no, that’s wrong. This is really disappointing.” I answered, completely perplexed.

“She had made a casual reference, but an entire vacation? Additionally, it looked like they had been organizing everything for a month or so. I apologize, Patty, but I think your daughter went a bit too far this time,” John replied in an irritated tone.

“Yes, this is disappointing,” I uttered regretfully.

I was completely unprepared for this news, which left a wound in my heart. Angie could have at least informed me that she wouldn’t be available.

After speaking with Angie for a short while, I asked her to come see me as soon as she could with the kids.

She didn’t want to annoy me, but it was too late. I will always love her as my daughter, but I was really upset.

Thank goodness John was there to ease the pain. But I was extremely hurt by what my daughter did. Right now, I’m not sure how to trust her.

How should I’ve responded in this situation?
